Editor’s note: During the month of ‘Ala’ a handful of writers collaborate to share one work for each day of the Fast.
Reunion
oh yes,
hello
hunger, you dark-haired girl
leading me to my backbone
guiding me barefoot
to the cold-tiled kitchen
where I remember
to not eat.
you point out
the things I forget
to see:
a drip at the sink
steam on oatmeal
crystals at the neck
of a maple jar.
it is unfair.
we make such fast friends
and yet,
where have you been
for so long?
what other kitchens
have you been haunting?
